Welcome to The ShellCast™: Savoring this Summer and more!
Welcome to the first edition of The ShellCast™ — a monthly newsletter / broadcast with tips and resources on how to cultivate more resilience and well-being in your life!
Summers bring me so much joy. I relish in the feeling of the warm sun, the flowers and fruits of my garden, the different bird songs, the openness - the lack of layers protecting us from the cold - the ability to be outside for hours and hours gardening, eating, resting, playing, laughing … ahhhh I love Summer!
Yes, I love summer. But I have found myself getting to June and saying - what happened it's already Summer and I'm not doing all that I love.
I've just gotten the house ready to enjoy the outside, and I've not gotten into the hammock, what about an outdoor shower? I've not taken a Sunday afternoon to just dive into a book.
Or worse, I wake up at the end of September and think to myself: “How did the summer go by so fast? What did I even do this summer?” Have you ever felt that way?
This year, I’m determined to savor each and every moment of this precious season.
I've shared the aspect of savoring in some of my workshops as a tool in Positive Psychology - this can serve as a reminder for you, and for those of you that have not yet learned about savoring in more general terms; like recognizing you are savoring an amazing seasonal strawberry this month in the NE!

This is The ShellCast™: A new monthly newsletter with tips, resources, and personal stories on proven resilience skills, so you can create more well-being in your life.
There are 3 distinct ways to “savor”. This is a wonderful mindfulness technique worthy of your attention; it's not simply taking in and appreciating something.
Here are the different types of savoring — As you read, imagine how you could apply these techniques in the moment:
Savoring the Past = Reminiscing. Recalling a memory of a Summer in your past, like hearing the sound of crickets outside your open window when you fell asleep as a child. Or running barefoot through the sprinklers with your nephews last summer.
Savoring the Present= Mindfulness. Savoring the present moment. This can be as simple as noticing the way the light filters through the trees and dapples the sidewalk with shadows, as you walk to work this morning. Or appreciating your coffee in the morning as you read this newsletter acknowledging how great it feels to have a few moments of peace (okay Moms, I know this is rare!!)
Savoring the Future = Anticipatory. Anticipating something exciting or fun in the future. Are you planning a trip this summer? Is there a family gathering, a wedding or reunion, a girls trip, a visit with your parents? Putting yourself in that picture and appreciating how special it can be.
This summer, I am planning to savor as much as I can on all levels.
For the present moment, I am savoring that I am actually writing to you through this vehicle and it’s the beginning of Summer. I’m on a plane in my comfy business class seat. I'm savoring that in a few hours (anticipatory) I will meet my grandson, August, and hold him for the first time!
I'm savoring my commitment to myself for my summer mornings by waking with the early light and having time to myself to think and create (anticipatory).
The other day I got my old Raleigh bike (a 3 speed with a basket and a bell!) out of the shed and rode to town — and savoring the past gave me an opportunity to reminisce about my childhood and the immense feeling of freedom that came from learning how to ride a bike and just take off down the road on my own; exhilarating!
I am also anticipating my summer and savoring the fact that I will nurture my tomato plants, rethinking aspects of my garden, shed more ‘stuff’ that's in my way, writing for my storytelling class (that's sooo exciting) swimming more and allowing for more time to think and create more. And continue to balance the various areas of my life.
How are you savoring the summer? How can you create more mindfulness both in the present moment, and in anticipation of the future?
Take a few minutes today to celebrate the Start of Summer by reflecting on ways you can savor this season.
